There have been a lot of questions regarding the 2014/2015 flu season. Year after year, it’s important to examine your situation to see if you need to get a flu shot. While there’s no way to predict how this year’s flu season is going to be, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Influenza is a virus and unable to be treated by antibiotics. Therefore, it’s a little more complicated to get rid of once someone has been infected. Most of the time patients will recover with no issues. However, there are a few high-risk people that should take steps to ensure they don’t get the flu.

  • Children younger than 5
  • Adults over the age of 65
  • Pregnant women

If you, personally, don’t fall into any of the above categories, you should still get a flu shot. Vaccinations aren’t a guarantee that you won’t get sick, only a precaution. So, even if your loved ones who do fall into the high-risk category get vaccinated, they could still be in danger of getting sick. Each person who has the influenza shot acts like a line of defense against the flu, therefore lowering the risk of infection.

People with certain medical conditions should also become vaccinated. Influenza could exacerbate chronic conditions, therefore increasing the risk of more serious complications. Those medical conditions include:

  • Asthma
  • Heart disease
  • Kidney disorders
  • Liver disorders

The CDC has a much longer list, which you can review here.
