Pneumococcus

What is Pneumococcus?

Pneumococcus is a type of bacteria that causes several types of infections, the most common being pneumonia. Every year, about 175,000 people are hospitalized because of pneumococcal infection. Older adults are especially vulnerable.

Pneumococcal Vaccine

All adults 65 years of age and older, along with any adult 19 through 64 years of age who is a smoker or has asthma, should be vaccinated with a Pneumococcal vaccine. International travelers should be up to date on all routine vaccinations, in addition to any recommended or required travel vaccines. Many travelers face unnecessary risk by going abroad without available protection against influenza or streptococcal pneumonia. (Resource ACP)
