Many other countries have mosquitoes that can cause diseases such as Malaria, Yellow Fever, Dengue, and Chikungunya. Yellow Fever can be prevented by receiving the Yellow Fever vaccine. Malaria can help be prevented by taking anti-malaria medications. All of these diseases can help be prevented by using a good repellent. A repellent for diseases such as Yellow Fever and Malaria is really a second line of defense. Unfortunately, we do not yet have vaccines or medications to prevent many of the other mosquito born illnesses, such as Chikungunya and Dengue Fever. Preparation is the key to prevention when it comes to keeping yourself safe from mosquito born illnesses. Make sure you have received the appropriate vaccines and medications well in advance of your departure. Also as your second line of defense, be sure to take along a good repellent containing 30-35 % Deet. Also, Permetherin, a chemical commonly found in a spray for clothing, nets, and other gear, is highly recommended if you plan to partake in any outdoor activities during your travel.
